Summer Studio

Summer Studio is part of Sage Gateshead’s Talent Development programme for music creators from all genres and backgrounds.

From 6 August – 26 August Sage Gateshead are opening the doors to their rehearsal studios and facilities and offering FREE short residencies (up to one week) for musicians, singers or artists of all genres to create new work, develop their practice or prepare for a performance.

Not only will you feel part of a thriving and exciting musical community here at Sage Gateshead but you will have the opportunity to network with and learn from industry experts and build relationships with like-minded artists. Your experience will be tailored by you, with support from Sage Gateshead to make sure that you gain what you need out of it.

There will also be the opportunity to perform at New Year New Artists, a 3 day festival which brings together rising stars from indie, folk, jazz and classical here at Sage Gateshead.

Don’t miss out on this rare chance to take advantage of Sage Gateshead’s world class facilities free of charge and make the connections to take your career to the next level.

During the week you will have the chance to:

  • Rehearse, create and collaborate for one week in a dedicated space at Sage Gateshead
  • Attend a one-to-one session with an industry professional for example, working on stage presence, concert programming, how to write successful funding bids, songwriting, PR, management or production
  • Attend a professional photoshoot
  • Record a demo
  • Perform in a two-day showcase in Sage Two at the end of your residency in front of family, friends, and invited members of the music industry (date TBC)
  • Opportunity to perform at New Year New Artists 2019

Previous artists in residence have included Sarah Fisher, Aeyther, Swine Tax, Katie Doherty and Harri Endersby.

Harri performed at New Year New Artists in January 2018 and has recently supported Lady Maisery at Sage Gateshead. Katie Doherty and Swine tax both wrote new songs whilst here. Katie used the time to put material together with her new band and they have since recorded an album and have started playing live shows. Swine Tax used their residency to write a new song, Feels Like, which has received ‘Single of the Month’ accolades across the Northern music press.

“The residency allowed us the time and space to really focus on developing ourselves musically and plan for the year ahead in terms of recording and performance. We were very grateful to be given a safe space in which to try out ideas. We have successfully completed writing our song, fleshed out one of our puppetry pieces, applied for rural touring and made a master plan for next year!

It was also validating to assign time and space to our creative endeavours. Once we were in the residency our music was made our main focus, which often can be overlooked due to other commitments. Giving ourselves the time and space to focus on our music restored its sense of worth and importance in a busy world and reconnected me creatively to our work.” Aeyther
