Barclay James Harvest are one of the world’s most successful progressive rock bands.
Formed in 1966, the band originally featured John Lees, Les Holroyd, Stuart “Wooly” Wolstenholme and Mel Pritchard.
Their eponymously titled debut album was released in 1970 on EMI. The band released three more albums with the label – ‘Once Again’, ‘Barclay James Harvest and Other Short Stories’ and ‘Baby James Harvest’ – before signing to Polydor in 1974.
1974’s ‘Everyone is Everybody Else’ is seen as the band’s artistic high point. It was voted into Radio Caroline’s Top 100 albums of all time. John Peel invited the band to record a session for BBC Radio One at this time also. Further albums – ‘Time Honoured Ghosts’, ‘Octoberon’ and ‘Gone to Earth’ – took the band to even greater popularity.
Barclay James Harvest played to 250,000 people in Berlin on 30 August 1980 and then to 170,000 people in East Berlin in 1987. After “Wooly” Wolstenholme left in 1980 the band continued as a three piece throughout the 1980’s. Sadly Mel Pritchard and “Wooly” Wolstenholme passed away in the 2000’s.
Lead vocalist and guitarist John Lees continues performing the band’s music to this day as John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest.
