Suzy Klein and guests launch this year’s Free Thinking Festival at Sage Gateshead with Radio 3’s drivetime programme.
Come and hear live performances from musicians including pianist Lars Vogt with members of Royal Northern Sinfonia, Newcastle based Diachronicx (the jazz singer and guitar duo Gabriele Heller and Steve Glendinning) and special guest, pianola expert Rex Lawson, who will perform a variety of pieces which revel in notions about music and time.
Other guests, giving us a flavour of what they are doing at this year’s event include Festival Lecturer and sleep expert Professor Russell Foster, and writer Kirsty Logan who has written a story specially commissioned on the theme of this year’s Festival: The Speed of Life.
For the last 30 years, Rex Lawson has performed in Europe, Australasia and North America including with conductors Pierre Boulez, Sir Andrew Davis and at the Last Night of the Proms and has recorded numerous CDs.
Gabriele Heller came to attention on the Newcastle jazz scene in 2011 and has performed at venues across the region. She is an associate lecturer in Performing and Visual Arts at Northumbria University and her collaboration with Steve Glendinning has resulted in a CD recording Diachronicx.
Lars Vogt first came to public attention when he won second prize at the 1990 Leeds International Piano Competition and he was the first ever pianist in residence at the Berlin Philharmonic. He has been the music director of Royal Northern Sinfonia since 2015. His CD recordings include repertoire by Mozart, Schumann, Brahms and most recently works by Schubert.
Suzy Klein is a regular presenter of Radio 3’s drive time show In Tune. For television she has presented documentaries on BBC Four including Rule Britannia! Music, Mischief and Morals in the 18th Century and Revolution and Romance: Musical Masters of the Nineteenth Century as well as opera broadcasts, BBC Young Musician of the Year, and hosting the global cinema broadcasts for the Royal Shakespeare Company. She is also one of the presenters of BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live.
