F.Schubert: String Quartet No.14, D minor “Death and the Maiden”
P.Haas: String Quartet No. 2, Op.7 “The Monkey Mountains”
J.Bradley: Brundibar Arts Festival Special Commission 2018 for string quartet and percussion.
The brilliant ‘Aviv Quartet’ will be making its debut in Newcastle. They are the winner of the Grand Prix at Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, 1st Prize at the Charles Hennen Competition and various other prizes at the Schubert Competition, Bordeaux String Quartet Competition and Prague Spring Competition.
The Quartet will be performing a programme of masterworks – a mélange between well-established repertoire and a brilliant but not well-known work by victim of the Holocaust Pavel Haas.
Launched in 2016, the annual Brundibár Arts Festival is the first recurring Festival in the UK dedicated to the Music and Arts of the Holocaust.
The Festival takes its name from children’s opera “Brundibár”. Brundibár, (meaning bumblebee) was written in 1938 by Jewish Czech composer Hans Krása, and first performed publicly by the children of Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943.
We see naming the Festival after Brundibár as a positive affirmation of creativity in adversity, and a lasting tribute to the children of Theresienstadt.
Now in its third edition, Brundibár Arts Festival has established a tradition to close the Festival with a specially commissioned piece of music. It represents our homage to those composers who perished. This is our way of carrying on their legacy and to look into the future!
This concert will be supported by the Cavatina Trust, making it free for under 26’s.
