How different is therapy from prayer? You might associate therapy with non-judgmental listening and prayer with fixed systems of belief. But what if it’s the other way round? Focusing on two of the world’s most secular societies – Japan and the UK – Chris Harding, from Edinburgh University, asks whether prayer might involve fewer hidden pressures and presumptions than a session with a shrink.
