Django Bates, Joakim Milder and the Norrbotten Big Band explore the music of Prefab Sprout and Charlie Parker

Sage One

Pre-concert talk at 6.30pm: Alyn Shipton talks with Django Bates and Joakim Milder (free to ticket holders)

Django Bates returns to Sage Gateshead with his Belovèd Trio in a new partnership with the GRAMMY-nominated Norrbotten Big Band from northern Sweden. Together they present a celebration of Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker – bebop pioneer and beloved hero of Bates – adding their own spin on Parker classics such as ‘Confirmation’, ‘Scrapple from the Apple’ and ‘Donna Lee’, interleaved with Bates’ own compositions, fast becoming part of the jazz canon.

Django Bates, his Belovèd Trio and Norrbotten Big Band performed at the Proms in August 2013 to great acclaim.

“It was a pleasure to enter the world of Django Bates, enriched by his trio Beloved and Norrbotten Big Band.” The Independent

“… brilliant original orchestration.” London Evening Standard

British Jazz original Django Bates talks to Sean Rafferty ahead of his Prom celebrating American Jazz legend Charlie Parker.

Multi-instrumentalist and band leader Django Bates inherits Charlie Parker’s ‘My Little Suede Shoes’ and passes on his own ‘Interval Song’.

This event also features Swedish composer, saxophonist, professor in improvisation, and today artistic director of Norrbotten Big Band, Joakim Milder. Joakim has always been a great fan of the pop icons Prefab Sprout – in 1995 he started playing and remodelling the hits of Paddy McAloon. Together with Norrbotten Big Band he’ll present the result: pop at its best with a jazzy sassy twist!

“I will do what I can to make the music less predictable and proper when coaching and conducting Norrbotten Big Band and I think the work we’ll do on Prefab Sprouts music is a good example!” says Joakim Milder.
