Nancy Kerr & The Sweet Visitor Band
Instar Album Launch Tour Sept/Oct 2016
BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year 2015 Nancy Kerr heads out on tour in support of her brand new album, Instar.
Already a respected interpreter of traditional material, Nancy’s emergence as a writer of rare style has drawn comparisons to William Blake in her reawakening of a radical folk mythology as a backdrop for contemporary narratives.
“A songwriter steeped in the tradition, but casting it anew.” Songlines
Since the release of her solo debut, Sweet Visitor and Murmurs her collaboration with Martin Simpson and Andy Cutting on Topic Records – Nancy finds herself increasingly fascinated by the role of the environment as a character in music, literature, art and film, Nancy’s new compositions explore the themes of human/ecological interaction that lie just beneath the surface of so many traditional folk songs.
“Quite breathtakingly beautiful” Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2
With her Sweet Visitor Band now an established unit, Nancy is joined on stage by bandmates Rowan Rheingans, Tim Yates, Tom Wright and Greg Russell.
The band’s music explores the lore and language of nature that provides a repertoire of raw, universal images with which to address subjects such as gender identity and sexuality, struggles for human rights, love and consent, colonialism and the effects of austerity on our culture and ourselves.
“Nancy Kerr’s songs are unusual, intriguing. Steeped in folksong, she nonetheless breaks out of the mould, coming sideways to her subject, embroidering it with detail and surprises until the focus of the song comes clear. She is such a good singer that sometimes you really have to concentrate to get the message – but it’s worth it when you get it.” Peggy Seeger
Plus pre-concert talk 6.30pm – 7.30pm
Writer and Folk Singer of the Year 2015 Nancy Kerr shares her perspectives on the democratic qualities of folk and traditional song language and her unique approach to making brand new pieces that are informed by the tradition. For singers, writers, teachers and anyone interested in creative writing using expressive and durable song frameworks.
