Folkworks: Fiddles on Fire

Frigg, Väsen and Chris Stout and Catriona McKay with the Scottish Ensemble

Sage One

A Nordic sandwich with a Scottish filling: an epic festival line-up with substantial sets from each act.

Frigg, from Finland, Possibly the most exciting, uplifting, gut-wrenching & hip-twitching band in the Northern Hemisphere, took Hall 2 by storm on their last visit. Named after the Norse goddess of love and fertility, this freewheeling, feelgood septet have created their own captivating style of music – Nordgrass, fusing Nordic folk and American bluegrass.

Catriona McKay and Chris Stout, Scottish harp and Shetland fiddle, are one of the country’s most elegant but powerful duos who continue to evolve and create a sound and style “operating at a rarefied level of expertise” (The Herald). We are delighted that as well as performing as a duo, they will be joined by the Scottish Ensemble, a core of 12 outstanding string players, to perform Sally Beamish’s evocative piece ‘Seavaigers’ plus more of Chris and Catriona’s own material.

The concert closes with a long awaited and rare UK performance from Swedish trio, Väsen. Olov Johansson’s nyckelharpa, Mikael Marin’s five-string viola and Roger Tallroth’s guitar combine in the ‘collective dynamic of a string quartet crossed with a bluegrass band’ (Rob Adams).

This from Thorben Dittes, Sage Gateshead Classical Director:

“Don’t miss the opportunity to hear the wonderful collaboration between Chris Stout and Catriona McKay and the Scottish Ensemble during Fiddles on Fire! This project exemplifies how artists from different genres at the top of their game can come together and produce something which is much more than the sum of its parts. The inventiveness of Chris and Catriona, combined with the energy and passionate playing of the Ensemble provides a truly magical combination, with Sally Beamish’s evocative musical sea voyage from Dundee to Shetland the perfect vehicle.

The collaboration was premiered at Celtic Connections on a double bill with Vasen, which truly brought the house down, and the Ensemble will have just returned from a tour to Brazil where they performed with Chris and Catriona in Rio and Sao Paulo – a project of truly international standard not to be missed!”

“…Invoking both serene panoramic vistas and sharp blazing melodies, the music has found fans far beyond the borders of the band’s native Sweden, and for good reason.” CMJ
