Breeding the Mongrel – Language Wars In Early Modern England

Defenders of traditional English language and grammar often present themselves as purists, even though English itself is a language which has never hesitated to borrow from ancient and modern languages. John Gallagher, from Cambridge University, brings to life the conflicts in the 16th and 17th centuries over the correct ways of writing and speaking, during a period when increased travel, trade and exploration saw English-speakers learning to speak to a wider world.
