Folkworks Junior Summer Schools

Chorister School

9 - 13 years

Booking Now Open For Folkworks Summer Schools 2015!

Our Folkworks Junior Summer School is held in Durham Choristers School right in the very heart of Durham city. The tutors are highly skilled, motivated, and energetic musicians who will teach repertoire, technique, and ensemble skills in a whole group including instrumental work, singing, and dancing.

This is complemented by smaller group work, musical games, jam sessions and a ceilidh. The students connect with the traditions from Great Britain and beyond while making lifelong friendships. We even find time for games and nightly hot chocolate!

We offer residential and non-residential places with accommodation comprising of dormitories with our experienced pastoral staff onsite 24 hours a day. The meals are made on site by the staff of the Choristers School and are both tasty and nutritious with non residential students receiving lunch and dinner at the school.

The school is open to any musician (including singers and dancers) who can play to a basic level, or more (a few tunes and scales), on an acoustic instrument. Unfortunately the school is not suitable for absolute beginners. If you have any queries please do contact us. You do not need to have prior knowledge of folk music nor do you need to be able to read music.

“Folkworks Summer Schools have been a great influence on my music. I am currently studying Folk and Traditional Music at university and don’t think I would have done without being part of Folkworks! I adored every minute of the week! Last year I absolutely loved being back as part of the junior pastoral team and it was still as much fun as it always was! Many of the friends I made years ago are still my best friends today.” Grace Smith – Junior and Youth Summer School, ex-Folkestra member, BMus Folk and Traditional Music student, Folkworks Tuesday tutor, Summer School pastoral staff.

Eliza Carthy (fiddle and voice)
Dave Gray (melodeon and piano)
Sarah Hayes (flute, whistle, voice, piano)
