Harmoniemusik from Il Seraglio
In July 1782 Mozart unveiled one of his most weird and wonderful creations: an opera enthused with Ottoman themes that sounded less ‘Austrian’ than anything he’d write. ‘The Abduction from the Seraglio’ used Turkish cymbals and piccolo to support its exotic and heartfelt narrative of devotion and freedom.
Exactly two centuries later Mozart’s own ‘suite’ version was discovered, scored for his beloved ‘harmoniemusik’ ensemble of glowing, piercing winds which brings the same music to life with uncanny conviction and style.
