Marti Pellow first shot to fame with Wet Wet Wet in 1985 with their hit Wishing I Was Lucky which reached number six in the Official UK Singles Chart. Together with the band, he scooped the Best British Newcomer title at the 1988 BRIT Awards. During their career they released eight studio albums and had 13 top 10 singles including Wishing I Was Lucky, Angel Eyes and Goodnight Girl.
Marti’s debut solo album Smile reached number seven in the Official UK Album Chart back in 2001, and his jazz album Sentimental Me showed off his versatility as an artist receiving rave reviews.
In 2002, Marti stepped into the world of musical theatre performing in Chicago in the role of Billy Flynn and he has appeared in the 25th anniversary concert of the musical Chess, as well as starring in Evita as Che.
Marti will perform a variety of material including Wet Wet Wet favourites, original material from throughout his solo career including new album tracks, along with a string of music theatre numbers.
Gateshead International Jazz Festival, BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking Festival and Folkworks Pass It On Festival take place on the south bank of the Tyne this Spring alongside Sage Gateshead’s usual programme of eclectic and high quality artists.
