Mika Vainio was one-half of the legendary Pan Sonic, whose caustic industrial textures and veering from minimalist to maximalist were hammered through some kind of mutant transmogrifier to produce something often beautiful, often terrifying, but always with a profound impact on the listener. He’s also produced a great raft of releases in his solo guise as Ø, leaning more towards achingly minimal techno and setting further benchmarks in production and aesthetics.
Over they years, Vainio has collaborated with Merzbow, Sunn O))), Alan Vega, Barry Adamson, John Duncan and countless others, many arguing that the recent PAN release of his collaboration with Kevin Drumm, Axel Dorner and Lucio Capece, and his recent work for Touch and Editions Mego are amongst the very best of his releases to date.
Mohammad is a chamber music trio consisting of Coti K (contrabass), ILIOS (oscillators) and Nikos Veliotis (cello). Based in Greece, Mohammad make long form work drone works that explore the lower end of the frequency spectrum whilst retaining an intense emotional capacity.
The results are monumental slow moving physical blocks of sound, both daunting and musical, as evidenced on their releases for PAN and Antifrost.
“Basic House is the work of Stephen Bishop, who also heads the burgeoning Opal Tapes and label and whose sound is streaked with cryptic chiaroscuro electro-acoustics, ritualist drone, edge-of-the-planet ambience and tape-ground industrial house patterns. At times it recalls an opiated, sleep-paralysed version of Andy Stott, maybe a darker adjunct to the frayed and abstract environs of Aaron Dilloway, or a more diffuse Thought Broadcast.” Boomkat.com
