Violin Concerto
BEETHOVEN
Symphony No.8 in F
Paradoxes and surprises, new sensations and curious colourings – all abound in the three works heard here. The delicate shadings of Beethoven’s short Eighth Symphony posed a far bigger challenge to the composer than the furious rhythms of the Seventh (15th November).
Bartók’s mysteriously scored creation has the feeling of music from another world – at once utterly foreign and beguilingly beautiful. In between come the soaring, luminous lines of Frank Martin’s Violin Concerto, played by the irrepressible Baiba Skride.
