Svara-Kanti brings together four leading performers in Indian classical, contemporary Asian and Western classical music to combine two of the world’s greatest and most diverse musical cultures, creating powerful new music using the classical, folk, spiritual and film music traditions of India as a basis.
The Indian-Western supergroup, led by visionary guitar virtuoso Simon Thacker, performs major new commissions by legendary American pioneer Terry Riley, British intercultural master Nigel Osborne, India’s greatest composer Shirish Korde and Simon Thacker in one of the most ambitious and wide ranging Indian-Western programmes ever assembled.
Also featuring the beautiful voice of Japjit Kaur, renowned tabla player Sarvar Sabri, who has a musical lineage stretching back ten generations to the Royal Court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, and acclaimed international violinist and leader of Britten Sinfonia Jacqueline Shave.
Svari-Kanti brings together these leading performers and composers in classical Indian, contemporary Asian and Western classical music to combine two musical cultures and create powerful and inspiring new music. Using the classical, folk, spiritual and film music traditions of India as a basis, each composer draws on their rich experiences of the contrasts between Western and South Asian Music in this innovative cross cultural project.
“an exuberant virtuoso display of rhythmic complexity” The Guardian
Simon Thacker is well known not only for his solo and chamber music performances, but also as a leader and composer for groundbreaking ensembles. He has performed all over the world and in 2009 led his Nava Rasa Ensemble, featuring nine of the UK’s finest Indian and Western classical musicians, on a celebrated UK tour. He is also the founder of Camerata Rimata, a cross genre collaboration with three of the UK’s leading jazz/world musicians.
Svara-Kanti’s 2012 programme features four major commissions by some of the world’s leading music creators. Legendary American pioneer Terry Riley, British modernist master Nigel Osborne, India’s renowned composer Shirish Korde and the group’s leader Simon Thacker explore a new intercultural musical language from a unique perspective.
