“…the orchestra’s exceptional musicianship shone through every carefully sculpted phrase”. The Arts Desk (November 2013, London Jazz Festival). Read the full review here.
Based on their award-winning album ‘In the Spirit of Duke’, Scottish National Jazz Orchestra director Tommy Smith sets out to give audiences as close to a real Ellington experience as possible.
The music spans most of Ellington’s career, including ‘Black and Tan Fantasy’, ‘Daybreak Express’,’ Rockin’ In Rhythm’, a ravishing tenor-piano duet of ‘The Single Petal of a Rose’ from ‘The Queen’s Suite’, as well as extracts from Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s re-interpretation of Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt Suite’.
The concert will begin with an intimate set from extraordinary British vocalist Jacqui Dankworth and charismatic Memphis-born singer/pianist Charlie Wood. The couple (they’re also husband and wife!) will perform new duet arrangements of their favourite Ellington/Strayhorn songs in a sublime combination of their vocal talents.
