The Bad Plus will be playing from their new album It’s Hard, which features ingenious genre-jumping covers made famous by Prince, Ornette Coleman, Kraftwerk, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more. After a decade together, they continue to redefine what a jazz piano trio can and should be.
Their expressive reading of Prince’s The Beautiful Ones – coincidentally recorded a month before the legend’s untimely death – is a potent tribute to a figure that loomed large in the lives of these fellow Minnesotan musicians.
“So, if this piano trio wants to play as loud as a rock band; well, let ‘em rip…these bad boys have the musicianship to back up their attitude.” The New Yorker
★★★★ “Wittily & wilfully they successfully rework songs. A fun album” The Times Read the full review.
Opening the show are Binker & Moses – who have worked together in a number of groups (including the ensembles of Abram Wilson) and are best known as the saxophone and drums section of Zara McFarlane’s band. Best Newcomer winners at the Jazz FM and Parliamentary Jazz Awards and Best Jazz winners at the MOBOs, the duo draw on all aspects of black music, their unusual chemistry constructing a sound that ranges from ‘a kind of unplugged dub ambience’ (Jazzwise) via lengthy entwined solos to groove-laden tracks.
