Led by Karin Hendrickson, Young Sinfonia is Sage Gateshead’s prestigious youth orchestra made up of around 40 players conducted and trained by visiting artists and members of Royal Northern Sinfonia. Young Sinfonia
brings together outstanding young string, wind, brass and percussion players from the North of England. Members are aged 13-19 and play at the standard of grade 7/8 and above.
Over the past few years the orchestra has been conducted by international figures such as Justin Doyle, Garry Walker, Ainars Rubikis, Nicholas Kraemer, Holly Mathieson and Jurjen Hempel and been joined by distinguished soloists such as Howard Shelley, and Mark Simpson, as well as providing concerto opportunities for its members.
Young Sinfonia perform concerts in venues across the North East and travelled on international tours to locations as far afield as Singapore. In 2016 they travelled to Skye to perform a programme including Beethoven 3. They have performed Mahler in Watford with the Purcell School Orchestra and Rimsky-Korsakov in Edinburgh with St Mary’s Music School. In February 2017 they were in residency at The Centre for Early Music in York rehearsing, performing and working with early music specialists Tim Smedley and Jenni Cohen. As part of the same residency they also premiered work by young composer Freddy Viner.
