Jazz North Introduces provides young Northern jazz artists with their first high-profile performance at major UK jazz festivals. This new Jazz North initiative builds on the mjf introduces scheme in Manchester, to showcase the very best new jazz talent from across the North of England, a hand-picked example of which you can hear at this event.
Jazz North assembled a panel of industry specialists, including internationally-acclaimed guitarist Mike Walker, to select the very best young band deserving of this cherished opportunity. The winning band was the Stretch Trio, a new band from Leeds combining jazz, ambient and rock influences. The trio features Andy French (21) on saxophone, Tom Higham (20) on drums and Calvin Travers (21) on guitar.
Stretch Trio have only been together for 6 months but in that time have developed a tight and individual band sound, and have written 7 original tunes and arranged jazz standards in some unusual ways. They have recorded a three track EP and played in Lancashire and West Yorkshire, and are sure to be invited to play plenty more throughout 2014.
Following their residency at the first Skye Swing Festival in autumn 2013, Sage Gateshead’s youth jazz ensemble Jambone present a suite of numbers entitled The Time Machine based on key jazz and swing composers and arrangers arranged for the group by musician/composer Rick Taylor and further developed for the festival.
“Jambone had the audience of MPs, Lords, jazz musicians and educators and jazz industry professionals totally on-side” Jazzwise, January 2014. Read the full review of Jambone’s performance at the House of Commons with Rick Taylor here.
