Arts Award Discover Residential Case Study

Advisor: Emma Ogle

Quay Lads and Quay Lasses are youth choirs based at Sage Gateshead with members coming from around the north east.

Each year the group takes part in a residential which includes rehearsals, learning new songs and working towards a performance.

In October 2015, they visited Ford Castle in Northumberland for two nights and rehearsed with their choir leaders and at the end of the residential both choirs performed at St Mary’s church on Holy island.

Emma introduced Arts Award to them a few weeks before the residential and talked about artists that influence them.

During the residential they also got the opportunity to record their experience of accessing arts through the Discover Arts Award.

With assistance from their advisor they looked at various artists/art-forms and also did some independent research. Given the nature of a residential, Emma advised them to come to Ford Castle with pictures and information to help complete their Arts Award booklet. This approach worked very well.

Emma said “Arts Award introduced our young singers some quiet concentration time while on residential, where they weren’t singing or playing physical game, but they were drawing, writing and talking about their interests. After the residential they shared with their friends in the choir the knowledge about their chosen artist and showed their booklet.’‘
