GIJF 2012 - Beats and Pieces

Posted on 7 March 2012

As we gear up for the enormous feast of fantastic jazz that is Gateshead International Jazz Festival, we’ll be blogging here about the artists, ensembles and participants that come together to make it the musical spectacular it is. Beats and Pieces are one act that are on the ascendant, bringing the big band bang up to date, and a nice bunch to boot.

“An oversize prog jazz behemoth with the odd customised nod to the likes of Quincy Jones and even Stan Kenton…big is most definitely back” Jazzwise

They’re playing in the Jazz Lounge on Saturday 24th March at 10.30pm – click here for the event page but do be sure to have a look at these first if you like your bands big and chewy.

Here’s their EP on Soundcloud:

“Their rich ensemble sound, delivered with the disciplined power of a fervent brass band, is this orchestra’s real signature. And also the true definition of Northern Soul.” Evening Standard

Great interview with the bandleader, Ben Cottrell here:

And finally, here they are in a more pensive mood at Ronnie Scott’s:
