In Harmony NewcastleGateshead: Reflections on Year One

Posted on 2 September 2013

What a year it’s been for In Harmony NewcastleGateshead at Hawthorn Primary School and Ashfield Nursery.

Our project is well and truly embedded into the school, and wider community of Elswick. The children are immersed in music. They all play an orchestral instrument for up to four and a half hours a week during school time. They enjoy playing together in various ensembles where they are learning invaluable skills: teamwork, social awareness, self confidence. The sense of pride and the fun we are all experiencing is immeasurable.

Throughout the year, children have performed at Sage Gateshead. They have been involved in workshops with Royal Northern Sinfonia, visited and performed at the Southbank Centre, and enjoyed four weeks of summer school in the holidays.

The whole school performed in school at the end of the summer term to a delighted audience made up of members of RNS, Sage Gateshead directors and staff, school governors, and, of course, families.

I am so proud to be involved in this project, and am very much look forward to working with the children in what I’m sure will be another exciting and inspiring year.
