In Harmony Strikes Back
By Annie Francomb – In Harmony Tutor
Friday 16th of October saw the return of the In Harmony musicians for another performance at Sage Gateshead. They had been invited to play on the concourse before Royal Northern Sinfonia thrilled an audience with a concert of music from the Star Wars films.
After weeks of intense rehearsal, an excited orchestra, consisting of present and past pupils from Hawthorn Primary School, stepped off their tour bus and were escorted into Sage One to sit in a private Royal Northern Sinfonia rehearsal. They were later ushered upstairs for a rehearsal of their own.
Just as they started rehearsing their own version of the Star Wars theme, Stephen Bell walked in. He had just finished conducting the Royal Northern Sinfonia and was very impressed to hear the In Harmony musicians working so hard, putting their finishing touches to the music.
It’s not every day that Darth Maul and Queen Amidala walk into our rehearsals, but this was a special treat. The In Harmony children were delighted to play to these strange characters.
After a little break, the children took their places on the concourse and gave a wonderful rendition of Star Wars, Saddle the Mule and Mambo United. As the concert was a sell-out there were hundreds of people on the concourse and the applause was loud and appreciative.
The In Harmony project has come a long way in a short time. The Force has Awoken and there is a New Hope for all these talented students.
