Students Meet Roberto Fonseca
By James Birkett
On Saturday 16th April current Sage Gateshead students on the CAT programme and the BMus degree joined members of the public to ‘Meet Roberto Fonseca’.
This was a very memorable ‘meeting’, as virtuoso pianist Roberto organised everybody into groups of percussionists or instrumental soloists and the business of making authentic Cuban music began. Joined by his bassist Yandy Martinez and drummer Ramses ‘Dynamite’ Rodriquez, Roberto took the newly-formed communal ensemble on an experiential journey through the textures, grooves and syncopations of the music of his Homeland.
This music is primarily a celebration of life, and the room was a sea of smiling faces throughout the journey. By the end, we had all become friends and resolved to make plans for a new life together in Cuba.
