SummerTyne 2017: An interview with Danni Nicholls

Review and interview carried out by Peter Mann BSc

Decked in black, guitar in hand, walking in the footsteps of her idol, the legendary Johnny Cash, Bedfordshire’s Danni Nicholls took centre-stage – actually she did so a few times at this year’s SummerTyne Americana Festival.

Scheduled to play the AMA UK Concourse, Nicholls made a full weekend of it also doing support slots for Angaleena Pressley and guesting on songs with Massey Ferguson and Beth Nielsen Chapman.

An exciting, bewildering performer, Nicholls encapsulated the crowd from the off in what was her maiden visit to Sage Gateshead.

Speaking after her performance she said: I’ve wanted, and been trying, to get here for years and I’m glad that I finally got the chance and I’ve absolutely loved every second. I’ve done a bit of everything over the past decade having started with jazz and playing saxophone when I was young. I inherited an electric guitar at 16 though and have never looked back.

I love rock & roll and grew up on Elvis Presley as well as old school country but also songwriters like Eva Cassidy and Carole King, I’ve always experimented with different genres and it all ends up in the mix somewhere.

With two studio albums and two EP’s already to her name having released her debut, A Little Redemption, in 2015, and more recently Mockingbird Lane this year, it’s the latter which was nominated for Album of the Year at the AMA UK awards, performing at the ceremony in February.

She added: When I got back into listening to the classic country and American roots music of my childhood in 2007 it felt like coming home; something just doesn’t want me to let go, and I’m glad I’ve stuck at it. The album award nomination was a big deal for me and I followed it up by supporting Shakin’ Stevens on his recent tour which was a fantastic experience. I’ve learnt a lot in the past twelve months and I’m really grateful for all the opportunities which are coming my way. I truly am just riding the wave.

With dates to be announced Danni will be touring again in November/December this year.
