In Harmony with award winning trumpeter Alison Balsom

Posted on 3 October 2014

Ahead of her concert at Sage Gateshead on Wednesday 1 October, multi award winning trumpeter Alison Balsom took time out to visit children from In Harmony NewcastleGateshead at Hawthorn Primary School in Elswick. This was a real treat for members of Hawthorn Symphony Orchestra as they were able to perform for Alison, listen to her talk about her experiences of playing trumpet and followed this with a lively and fun question and answer session.

A professional classical trumpeter since 2001, and voted Classic FM’s ‘Female of the Year’ twice over, Alison has a keen interest in music education. She delighted the children with a perfect rendition of the theme tune to Match of the Day, declaring that “It was the first song I played in my school band”. The children from years three to six, played Vivaldi’s ‘Autumn’ for Alison who declared: “I’ve never heard such a brilliant children’s orchestra. Keep practising!”

In Harmony is a national programme that is inspiring and transforming the lives of children, families and the wider community. In Harmony is modelled around the schoolchildren participating in an orchestra, and Royal Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of Sage Gateshead, are central to this project working with Hawthorn Primary School and Ashfield Nursery.

Funding from Arts Council England and Department for Education has bought a musical instrument for every child in the school and enabled music tutors from Sage Gateshead and the Newcastle and Northumberland Music Education Hub to work with the pupils, their parents and the school staff on a daily basis.
