American jazz artists Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spalding and Joe Lovano are among the acts booked to play the 2014 Gateshead International Jazz Festival. The annual festival hosted by Sage Gateshead – one of the biggest jazz festivals in the UK – is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an American-themed event.
Sage Gateshead Performance Programme Director Ros Rigby said: “For the 10th Jazz Festival we have our strongest ever line up, with stars from the jazz scene coming to Gateshead from across the UK and Europe – as well as some great American names.
“American visitors include jazz pianist and producer Robert Glasper, who has worked with Jay-Z, Kanye West and Erykah Badu and is known for his special blend of jazz with hip-hop.
“We’ve got the talents of vocalist and bass player Esperanza Spalding – the first jazz artist to win a Best New Artist Grammy Award. And there’s saxophonist Joe Lovano, and the prolific jazz fusion drummer Jack DeJohnette.“
“The Bill Frisell Trio, featuring one of the world’s favourite jazz guitarists, will be another major highlight. The festival really is something everyone should experience.
“The type of music that counts as jazz often surprises people so people who think they are new to the genre are often bigger jazz fans than they first thought.“
Performers from Europe include the Norbotten Big Band and saxophonist Joakim Milder, who’ll be playing alongside UK jazz composer Django Bates.
The Gateshead International Jazz Festival was the first festival held in Sage Gateshead after its opening in December 2004.
