Singing Cities, 2013-15

Posted on 12 January 2013

In March 2012, Hans Kåre Flø (Musikkens studieforbund, Norway) suggested that the Singing Nations Network launch a project. In July, the constituting group agreed to submit an application to the European Culture Programme. In October, the group decided to support the Singing Cities programme designed by The Aarya Foundation in Berlin and Brussels. Radialsystem V in Berlin, Bozar in Brussels, the Municipality of Namsos in Norway and Sage Gateshead in the United Kingdom joined forces with The Aarya Foundation, Musikkens studieforbund and the Universities of London and Oldenburg to submit the grant application

We are delighted to announce that our bid has been successful and we have been funded to deliver the programme from May 2013 until April 2015.

During the first year, Singing Cities will map the existing singing education and performance facilities and report. We will then formulate objectives in collaboration with existing education and performance facilities and develop a singing roadmap which will be followed in the forthcoming year.

Activities will grow year-by-year, from modest to more ambitious goals, building on our existing social and artistic qualities. We will promote music education through singing and performance, across generations, gender, ethnicities and cultural communities, with faith and non-faith groups, affluent and deprived neighbourhoods, abilities and disabilities, and professionals and amateurs.

Part of the programme will be major projects and annual meetings for partners and members of the Singing Nations Network. In 2013 these include:

  • 22-23 June, Create Choral, Newcastle Gateshead as part of Festival of the North East (United Kingdom)
  • 8-10 November, With Life for Culture and Singing Nations Network Third Annual Meeting, Namsos (Norway), see below
  • 3-20 December, Singing Brussels, Belgium

Become a partner or member of the Singing Nations Network to engage with the programme or contact us at singingnations@thesagegateshead.org. We will publish more details soon.
