Singing Nations Network Third Annual Meeting, 2013

Posted on 12 September 2013

The next meeting will be in the town of Namsos, Norway on 8 – 10 November 2013. Our colleagues from the Culture Department of the Municipality of Namsos invite us to their beautiful singing town.

Namsos is the city of the region Namdalen, reaching from sea to mountains. Namsos was founded in 1845 and is located in Namdalen in Nord-Trøndelag , 20 miles north of Trondheim and 8 miles north of Steinkjer. The surface area of Namsos municipality is 804 square kilometers and it has a population of 12,993 inhabitants.

Namsos has been obliterated by fire or bombs three times. In 1872 two boys were playing with matches and 80% of the buildings burned, in 1897, the city caught fire from a house by the sea and only 20 houses and 2 sawmills remained and the third time was in 1940, when Namsos was bombed.

Namsos has a strong tradition for singing with folk music traditions. Namsos started as a singing city after the World War II when returning sailors brought back the latest music from Britain and the US; rock and roll came early to the young people of Namsos. The music from the records was copied, blended with local music traditions and gave rise to a special genre called “trønderrock” which means rock from Trøndelag, the mid part of Norway. Today Namsos has a very active culture policy and one of the most active culture schools in Norway with more than one thousand pupils.

Namsos is one of the first towns dedicated to developing a singing society within the framework of Krafttak for sang, the Norwegian part of Singing Nations Network.
