Avoid FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) with a whole world of music to experience at Sage Gateshead.

Posted on 17 May 2017

Always delighted to help introduce audiences to new musical experiences, Sage Gateshead has announced a number of gigs to help anyone inclined to FOMO (Fear of missing out) be the envy of their friends whilst enjoying a range of amazing world music vibes. Bringing the sounds, rhythms and a little bit of the culture from around the globe right to the Quayside, Sage Gateshead’s world music series gives everyone the chance to try something new. With summer right around the corner, the series is perfect for globetrotters, or stay at home globetrotters, alike.

The series begins on Friday 19 May, with Gem Arts presenting Riverside Ragas: Double Bill: Routes and An Inner Voice. Routes’ versatile guitarist, Giuliano Modarelli, uses the notion of the drone to incorporate sounds of dub and spiritual jazz to Indian Classical music. Keeping the melodic material intact, Giuliano focuses on sounds, production and grooves to give new life to his music. In An Inner Voice, young duo Kobini Ananth and Yarlinie Thanabalasingham create an innovative piece experimenting with a notion rarely used within Carnatic music. This performance is accompanied by a pre-concert talk at 7pm for those who really want to deepen their experience.

For those who want some summer party vibe, and off the back of their latest album Madjafalao, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo are in Sage Two, on 27 May, bringing their unique and fascinating sound as the oldest active African orchestra. Their up-beat stage presence is not one to miss. Grab a group of friends and head on down for an amazingly invigorating experience.

On 22 June, fans of Radiohead are in for a real treat when Shye Ben-Tzur & The Rajasthan Express present Junun, a film which documents the making of the album of the same name. Songs from Junun will be featured in support of Radiohead on several of their European tour dates this summer making the Sage Gateshead preview an excellent opportunity to see what it is all about.

Moving further into the Summer, on 17 July, as part of GemArts Masala Festival, Sacred Sounds tells some of the largely forgotten stories of British India’s role in the First World War. This is going to be a thought provoking un-missable show, as families stories are told through the diverse music of the time, Shabads, recruitment songs and folk songs – including a mother’s lament for a departing son. Haunting stuff that will stay with you for days.

Finally, join acclaimed musical adventurers Omar Sosa and Seckou Keita on 21 November. An exquisitely beautiful new collaboration between the seven-time GRAMMY-nominated pianist, composer and bandleader Omar Sosa from Cuba, and the award-winning Senegalese kora master and singer Seckou Keita. Melding together Latin American and West African music in a uplifting performance, you simply have to hear.
With all these events going on, now is certainly the time to try something new, get a taste for something a little bit different and avoid the dreaded fear of missing out.
