A Romantic Celebration Of Ten Years

Posted on 12 December 2014

Over the ten years that Sage Gateshead has been open, the venue has seen almost 120 couples marry in its beautiful surroundings. In celebration, Sage Gateshead are welcoming some of those couples back on Sunday 21 December to enjoy a romantic meal in Northern Rock Foundation Hall – one of the spaces regularly used to marry couples. This special evening forms part of Sage Gateshead’s six-day birthday party FUNFAIR, starting on 16 December. This year’s birthday is a special one and the venue’s spectacular 10th Birthday celebrations have already started and continue right through to summer 2015.

The special couples who have tied the knot or celebrated their marriage at the venue have all helped to make Sage Gateshead the place it is. Following the opening on 17 December 2004, Sage Gateshead quickly established itself as an international home for music and musical discovery and very quickly became a much loved venue. This invitation to a romantic dinner is the team’s way of recognising how the weddings have played a part in shaping what Sage Gateshead means to people. The meal will be followed by the chance to see either Royal Northern Sinfonia’s concert or Eliza Carthy’s concert that evening.

The wedding team has enjoyed helping couples to plan and celebrate their special day and have helped to make the weddings personal to every couple. Maziar Mahmid said after their wedding at Sage Gateshead: “I can’t tell you how much we enjoyed it and how amazing you and all the staff were for us. I can assure you that even now everyone is still talking about it and the word continues to spread of the fantastic job you did for us and how considerate you and your team were to all of our needs.”

Sage Gateshead’s wedding team is looking forward to working with the its future brides and grooms and as they embark on the next decade of weddings, they are offering an exclusive offer – regardless of the size of the wedding or the wedding package chosen – to anyone who books their wedding by April 2015. Couples will be offered Sage Gateshead’s ten wedding accompaniments which include wedding invites in the form of a concert ticket; a selection of favours; meal in the Brasserie; bottle of fizz; and the offer of the venue for a pre-wedding photo shoot with your own photographer. The wedding needs to be booked by April 2015 but doesn’t have to take place by then.

Celebratory events are linked to Sage Gateshead’s 10th birthday appeal which is raising funds to ensure our great musical engagement programme across the region can continue and we are delighted that many high profile artists including Sting, Pet Shop Boys and Beverley Knight kindly agreed to perform in support of the appeal.

In June 2012, Arts Council England set Sage Gateshead the challenge of raising £4 million by July 2015 (in order to claim an additional £2 million in match-funding) to help secure the future of this important work. In December 2014, Sage Gateshead will celebrate its 10th Birthday, Its correspondent birthday appeal runs until the summer of 2015, and features a number of high profile concerts and celebrations. Each will help Sage Gateshead to meet the challenge set by Arts Council England and help to ensure that its work in the North East can continue.

The venue, designed by Foster and Partners, is home to Royal Northern Sinfonia. This orchestra was founded in 1968 and received royal status from Queen Elizabeth II in June 2013. Sage Gateshead is also home to the North East’s longstanding Folkworks programme – formed in 1988 to promote and encourage the furtherance of folk music across the region. What’s more, Sage Gateshead runs many other musical education programmes, each enabling people of all ages and abilities to become involved in music. 70 per cent of the work of these programmes takes place outside of the venue and at the heart of local communities.
