Join Royal Northern Sinfonia on their musical summer holiday this July
It wouldn’t be British summer time without a bit of rain – but even the horrendous downpours of the past few weeks have failed to dampen Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Summer Prom plans.
Taking place on Saturday 29 July at 7.30pm in Sage One, this year’s Prom takes audience members on a summer holiday with RNS, conductor Timothy Burke and award-winning Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw, journeying through the music of France and Spain before heading back to good ol’ blighty for some classic Last Night favourites.
Speaking ahead of the concert, Timothy Burke said: “I’m particularly excited that we’re going to be playing The Golden River by Edgar Bainton, which I don’t think has been played live since the First World War.”
Bainton, who moved to the North East when he was 21, lived in Stocksfield and was piano professor at Newcastle upon Tyne Conservatory of Music – housed in what is now Quilliam Brothers’ Teahouse.
Timothy added, “Bainton used to go on long walks in the countryside with his friends and although this piece is based on a fairytale by John Ruskin, you can see him being inspired by his love of the landscape around him. Just wait until you hear it orchestrated – it is absolutely stunning.”
Also on the programme is Chabrier’s most famous orchestral composition España, Bizet’s Carmen and Ravel’s Pavane, with Last Night classics Zadok the Priest, Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Rule, Britannia! and Pomp and Circumstance completing the Summer Prom experience.
Get down early – there’ll be Pimm’s and strawberries & cream on offer for you to enjoy with views of the Tyne in the late afternoon sun…or under a brolly!
Tickets for RNS Summer Prom range from £16.50 – £39.50, with family tickets also available. Book tickets online or through Sage Gateshead Ticket Office either in person (open from 12pm) or by calling 0191 443 4661.
Also to look forward to in Royal Northern Sinfonia’s summer season at Sage Gateshead are two chamber music concerts on Wednesday 19 July and Wednesday 26 July, both at 8pm in Sage Two, featuring music by Beethoven, Strauss, and Prokofiev.
