Opening Night concert set to kick off Sage Gateshead's new Classical Season - with a little help from the New Word
Sage Gateshead’s Classical Season 2017/18 is just around the corner – and tickets are flying for Royal Northern Sinfonia’s Opening Night concert.
Taking place on Saturday 16 September, the musical highlight of the programme is Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’. Familiar to millions as the theme of a certain bread advert, Dvořák’s final symphony is one of classical music’s best-loved works, with RNS musician Michael O’Donnell taking centre stage for the symphony’s famous Largo movement.
Speaking ahead of the concert, RNS Music Director Lars Vogt said: “If there’s any composer that I’ve discovered over the last 15 years where I didn’t quite understand what a genius they were, it’s Dvořák.
“His ninth is a piece that I’ve loved for a long time, and I’m really looking forward to conducting this marvellous symphony with my Royal Northern Sinfonia.”
The programme also features Barber’s heartrending Adagio for Strings, as well as music by Copland and Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, for which Royal Northern Sinfonia will be joined by renowned Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth.
Ticket prices for Opening Night range from £13 to £38 and are selling fast. If more than one concert takes your fancy this season, Sage Gateshead’s concert package deal might be for you. You can save up to 25% through the offer – and if you include the Opening Night concert in your package, you’ll get a free glass of fizz on the night to celebrate the new season!
