Philip Glass Symphony No.11 UK premiere tour arrives at Sage Gateshead

Posted on 15 September 2017

Just a few months after their sell-out performance with the Bootleg Beatles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sgt Pepper, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra are returning once again to Sage Gateshead – this time to make musical history as well as celebrate it.

On Saturday 30 September, the award-winning orchestra will take to Sage One for a performance of Philip Glass’ new Symphony No.11, which was met with rave reviews at its world premiere at Carnegie Hall earlier this year.

Philip Glass, who turned 80 in January, has gained worldwide recognition as one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th and early 21st centuries – and it’s not difficult to understand why.

Known for his huge breadth of work from minimalist music to Academy Award-winning film scores, the American composer has also written numerous operas and musical theatre works, eleven symphonies, eleven concertos and seven string quartets, and collaborated with the likes of David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Ravi Shankar, Patti Smith, Aphex Twin and David Byrne.

Counting artists such as Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Echo and The Bunnymen amongst their own musical collaborations, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s dynamic music partnership with Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko has attracted worldwide critical acclaim and drawn new audiences to live classical music.

Their visit to Sage Gateshead also includes a performance of one of Rachmaninov’s best known and most popular works, Symphony No.2; sections of which feature in Antonio Sánchez’s score for the 2014 film Birdman.

Tickets range from £16.50 – £39.50 and can be booked online at or by calling Ticket Office on 0191 443 4661.
