Sage Gateshead summer line up a scorcher

Posted on 29 April 2014

Whatever your musical taste, Sage Gateshead’s summer programme will have a treat to entice and the essential guide to everything to see and do at this iconic venue this summer is now available in print and on-line.

With summer comes the SummerTyne Americana Festival, a weekend Mecca for lovers of Americana music with a sizzling headline menu including The Jayhawks, Booker T. Jones, Bettye Lavette and Hollywood and blues star Steven Seagal.

Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) completes Opera North’s epic 4-year cycle of Wagner’s Ring and another long journey comes to an end, Thomas Zehetmair’s outstanding 12 years as Music Director of Royal Northern Sinfonia. He bows out with two very special events, Beethoven’s monumental Missa Solemnis and a final concert of grand gestures, providing a fitting tribute to his remarkable tenure.

As always, summer finds Royal Northern Sinfonia at a more relaxed pace, with a concert devoted to Burt Bacharach and accompanying singer-songwriter star Ben Folds. We welcome back another of the players’ delicious summer chamber music festivals, this one placing Schubert in lively, unexpected contexts!

The eclectic programme at Gateshead Old Town Hall includes roots reggae legends Misty in Roots, the astonishing guitarist Pierre Bensusan and Patrick Street, a dazzling line-up of four of Irish music’s finest.

Sage One’s offering of international artistes includes singer/songwriter David Gray, progressive rock band Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and alternative rock band Eels.

We’re presenting another summer Festival of Youth Orchestras plus a huge range of end-o-year showcase performances by our very own student musicians and ‘At the Seaside’ for very young children.

There are a wide range of fun family activities taking place from treasure trails to storytelling, arts and crafts to music making. You can even help us celebrate 25 years of Folkworks Summer Schools and 10 years of Sage Gateshead by taking part in our world record attempt, a 24 hour folk jam.

Talking of folk, Folkworks Summer School brings an acclaimed national focus for folk learning, this year under the new leadership of Sage Gateshead’s new Folkworks Artistic Associate, Eliza Carthy.

If you can’t wait until summer then there are plenty more tempting events to enjoy this spring including Graham Gouldman (10CC), jazz pianist Joe Stilgoe, legendary gospel group Blind Boys of Alabama and exciting jazz trio Phronesis.
