SummerTyne Americana Festival 2016 Countdown!

Posted on 15 July 2016

A highlight of the region’s summer calendar, SummerTyne Americana Festival rolls into town on 22 July, bringing three days of the best country, folk, bluegrass, rockabilly, blues, soul and roots music. With concerts in and around Sage Gateshead featuring some of the finest and most exciting performers from both sides of the Atlantic, as well as home grown talent from across the region and the hugely popular Jumpin’ Hot Stage, SummerTyne 2016 promises to be a scorcher!

Headliners taking to Sage One stage include vintage and rockabilly queen Imelda May, country royalty Mary Chapin Carpenter and Nashville’s Striking Matches and the UK’s Ward Thomas, plus special guest singer-songwriter Callaghan, in an exciting transatlantic bill.

One of the Americana scenes most influential and award-winning singer-songwriters Gretchen Peters performs in Sage Two with special guest Dean Owens. The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Lucky Peterson and The Kentucky Headhunters bring raw, authentic blues, soul and southern rock and there’ll be dazzling bluegrass styling’s from Ron Block (Alison Krauss and Union Station) with mandolin protégé Sierra Hull. For something different there will be a unique and highly anticipated bluegrass rework of The Who’s rock opera ‘Tommy’, by The HillBenders.

Other gems for Americana aficionados include rare appearances by Texas’ favourite country duo Kelly Willis & Bruce Robison plus Brennen Leigh & Noel McKay, New York’s new folk pioneers The Mike + Ruthy Band and Gill Landry from Old Crow Medicine Show. The Song-Writer’s Circle features four huge talents, with soaring country gospel from Yola Carter, raw retro country from Brennen Leigh, alt-country and blues from Amythyst Kiah and hard rocking-folk-alt-country from Amelia White.

There’s lots to enjoy for free at SummerTyne too. On the Jumpin’ Hot outdoor stage, country appetites will be further sated by Eve Selis, 10 String Symphony, Luke & Mel, Urban Pioneers and Mary Jean Lewis plus soaring country gospel from Yolanda Carter and Mississippi blues from Little Victor. With street food, Concourse performances, a film programme, talks, and a photography exhibition, James Perry Walker: The Preacher and His Congregation, curated by Amber, we defy you not to find something to blow you away, get your feet tapping and put a huge smile on your face. It’s SummerTyne time!
