Sage Gateshead's Youth Ensemble Perform on Classic FM
Members of Sage Gateshead’s Quay Voices – the North East’s regional youth choir ensemble – will be singing on Classic FM on Saturday [22 December], performing some of the winning compositions that were submitted to ‘A Carol for Christmas Competition’.
The competition ran in the summer of 2012, when King’s College Cambridge and The King’s Singers Foundation offered composers of all ages across the UK, the opportunity to showcase their talent in this special festive composition competition. The competition itself generated a huge response with over 320 entries.
The judging panel, made up of choral experts John Rutter CBE, Stephen Cleobury CBE and David Hurley selected winning pieces to be performed by a selection of choirs, including Quay Voices, on 18 December at Kings College which was recorded and will be broadcast on Classic FM on Saturday’s Anne Marie Minhall’s afternoon show.
The GRAMMY award winning ensemble, The King’s Singers, sang the winning piece whilst Quay Voices sang the ‘over-18 Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass’ winning entry piece, ‘Blessed be that Maid Marie’. The sopranos and altos from Quay Voices performed the winning piece from the community choir category along with King’s Junior Voices and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Young voices.
Quay Voices Conductor Matt Beckingham, “I was thrilled that Quay Voices were able to take part in such an occasion. To sing in King’s College Chapel was exceptional in itself, but the chance for them to work with The King’s Singers and Steven Cleobury, made the experience even more special.
“It was particularly wonderful that Sage Gateshead’s youth choir took on a beautiful but challenging new piece of work with skill and precision and through their talents they acted as true ambassadors for the North East. “
The event was hosted by The King’s Singers and King’s College Cambridge and the other choirs singing the winning pieces were King’s Junior Voices, CBSO Young Voices and the London-based Inner Voices.
Members of Quay Voices come from all over including Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Teesside and Hexham.
Jacqui Cameron, Young Musicians Programme Manager at Sage Gateshead said: “It was a great opportunity for our young North East singers from Quay Voices to spend the afternoon in Kings College Cambridge singing new carols and working with fantastic choral singers as well as the chance for others to be able to hear them on Classic FM.”
