Young Achiever of the Year Award is Awarded to Sage Gateshead Member of Staff
Alastair Milburn, a young employee at Sage Gateshead has recently been awarded Young Achiever of the Year in 2015’s Gateshead Awards.
The Gateshead Awards, presented annually by the Mayor of Gateshead, celebrates all those who have made a real difference to the lives of others in the borough. The Gateshead Award recognises the hard work and dedication of volunteers, carers and everyone else who goes out of their way to make the borough a better place to live, work and visit.
Alastair, a young adult with special educational needs and disabilities, first came to Sage Gateshead on a group work taster session from GATES (Gateshead Access to Employment Service). He then applied for and was successful in gaining an unpaid work placement experience with the catering team.
Benefits of the experience to Alastair and the catering team quickly became apparent. He gained a range of new skills and was able to further develop his existing ones. Initially working on food preparation in the kitchen, Alastair was given increasing responsibility and also began regular shifts serving customers in the café. This had a profound effect on his confidence and communication skills and he was soon employed in a permanent part-time role.
Kathleen McIntyre, Employment Support Worker for GATES (Gateshead Access to Employment Service) says: “As someone who has supported Alastair into employment it has been a pleasure to watch Alastair bloom and I am extremely proud of what he has achieved.”
James Witts, Catering General Manager, Sage Gateshead added: “Alastair has been a real star for us since he began working with the catering team here at Sage Gateshead. We were all right behind his nomination for the Young Achiever of the Year Award and obviously very proud of him when we heard he had won. Alastair continues to show great commitment during his work and we only ever receive very positive feedback about his attentiveness and his customer service skills.”
